Supporting growth to become strong, confident leaders

I work with mid- and senior-career professionals to support their growth into strong, confident leaders with deep self-awareness of their strengths and development areas. This clarity enables them to maximise their potential and empower their teams to achieve exceptional performance and outcomes.

Drawing on extensive leadership experience across healthcare and academia, I bring a grounded, pragmatic perspective to every coaching relationship. My approach is flexible and tailored — blending behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, person-centred, and systemic methods. I adapt the balance of coach, mentor, and consultant to match what will move you forward.

My work centres on purpose and agency: supporting leaders to understand not only what they want to achieve, but why it matters — and how to act decisively to make it happen.

What I offer

I work privately with clients and through institutional engagements, delivering individualised coaching that aligns with the specific goals and needs of both individuals and organisations. Most programmes involve 6–9 sessions of 45–60 minutes, offered either in person or virtually.

Throughout the coaching programme, we work in partnership through confidential, structured conversations. You set the goals for the programme and for each session; I create the environment that drives your development, growth, and reflection. Together, we generate principles and practical strategies that will guide your future action.

You might consider coaching when you are:

  • Taking on a new or expanded role
  • Navigating significant organisational change
  • Feeling stalled or uncertain in your career progression
  • Struggling with workplace culture, expectations, or dynamics
  • Seeking to introduce change within your team
  • Returning to work after leave or a career break

If you’re seeking a coach, either for yourself or some of your team members, who brings depth, challenge, and genuine partnership to your development journey, I’d be delighted to hear from you.

Research Consultancy

Strengthening research capacity, capability and impact

I provide tailored research consulting that supports research leaders, teams, and doctoral candidates to strengthen capability, build confidence, and deliver meaningful outcomes and impact.

Working in partnership with academic colleagues, I help refine research direction, strengthen methodological rigour, and develop the structures and skills needed to create a positive research environment and support the production of high-quality, credible research.

My consultancy focuses on strategies that optimise research success and accelerate the development of researchers at every stage.

What I offer

I work with research leaders to design an activity plan that directly responds to their needs. Activities can range from a few hours to a week or more. Examples include:

  • Partnering with research team leaders to refine goals and strategy, and to build an environment where every team member can thrive in their research career.
  • Delivering workshops for doctoral candidates on academic writing, refining arguments, developing publications, and preparing for key milestones.
  • Supporting mid-career researchers to create individual plans that advance their research trajectory and enable them to produce impactful work that contributes to their profession and society.

If you are seeking a research consultant who brings extensive and varied experience to work beside your team to grow expertise and impact, I’d be delighted to hear from you.

About Leanne

Leadership, research and coaching experience

Leanne Aitken, executive coach and research consultant

I am Professor Emerita in the School of Health & Medical Sciences at City St George’s, University of London, following a distinguished career that included roles as Professor of Critical Care, Associate Dean (Research & Enterprise), Strategic Academic Lead for organisational integration, and interim Vice-President (Research). Across these leadership positions, I focused on building strong research cultures, strengthening academic capability, and improving outcomes for critically ill and injured patients.

Having led teams and driven significant organisational change, I understand the complexities that new and emerging leaders must navigate as they develop themselves while succeeding in their role.

Alongside these career achievements I am a trained executive coach (Henley Business School, 2025) and an experienced mentor to staff, students, and emerging leaders. I am known for building collaborative cultures, developing people, and leading change in complex environments.

I am a highly experienced supervisor, having supervised and examined masters and doctoral students across Australia, Asia, the UK, Europe, and South America. I am a Recognised Research Supervisor (UKCGE). My mentorship extends beyond formal supervision – leading mentorship programmes for academics, supporting early career researchers, and delivering workshops globally on research design, writing, and evidence translation.

My research career is marked by sustained productivity and influence: more than 175 peer-reviewed publications, an H-index of 41, over 14,000 citations, and more than £12.6 million in research and research-training funding secured. I have led and contributed to major national and international trials, developed complex interventions, advanced sedation and delirium science, and shaped trauma recovery research. I am widely recognised for my expertise in critical care recovery, injury and trauma management, and process evaluation and hold honorary professorial appointments at the University of Melbourne, Australia and the Universidad del Salvador, Argentina.
